![]() ![]() I suspect that one of the reasons I don’t get tired of playing “Sunny Georgia” is that I always really liked the lyrical construction and the music feels like an old friend. It’s a freedom I’ve never felt and sort of envy. Chris once told me that Hank Williams Sr was the same way, borrowing music freely from other songs and adapting his own lyrics. I’m always afraid to sound too much like other, more famous songs. It’s one of Chris’s genius attributes that he does not realize he’s borrowing from other songs, which is what frees him up to write familiar sounding melodies and chord progressions. The walking bass line in the song is ripped straight from “ Stray Cat Strut“. I told Chris once that it was one of the few songs I never got tired of. I wrote lyrics for four of the 11 songs on that record, but “Sunny Georgia” was always my favorite to play. It must not have been solid enough to make it on to that first record, but it was the lead-off tune on the next record, “ Too Many Treasures“. ![]() I think Chris and Doug Trail-Johnson worked up the melody/chords together, and I remember them playing it for the band at Chris’s house at a practice night. I wrote the lyrics to “Sunny Georgia” in the autumn of 1998 and gave them to Chris. One such time was that original recording session at the First Baptist church building in Lowertown Saint Paul, and I’m forever grateful she made it there. Heidi O and I played music together at Heidi VS’s wedding in the late summer of 1998, and it was so magical that we tried to play together several more times before life logistics intervened. Heidi and I met through our mutual friend Heidi Van Schooten. I will mention Heidi Olson and her beautiful violin playing on that first record, which we called the white album because it originally had no art or title, just a white cardboard sleeve. A good origin story I’ll tell another time. There’s a good origin story for how Chris Larson and I met, and how I got Peter Rasmussen involved, and how one thing led to another until we found ourselves setting up mics in the church baptistry on a cold Saturday in the winter of 1998/99. I don’t think I’m overstating things to claim that the band would not have made any records at all, and maybe never started a record label, if I hadn’t wandered into the church one evening in the fall of 1996, then again in the summer of 1997. We were the host band at the House of Mercy church in Saint Paul. The House of Mercy Band recorded several albums from 1999 to 2010. Instead I wrote a lot of songs, and then moved back to Saint Paul and re-joined the House of Mercy Band, and we made some records. I never ended up taking any classes at Emory. She’s in Sydney, Australia, and thanks to the magic of the internet her voice was in my ears as I mixed this one. I am especially grateful to my friend Andrea who contributed background vocals to this track. So it was fun to make that connection 23 years later. I realized, recording this last winter, that I had never told my sister about “Abilene” or played it for her. I set it to music a week later, after I finished my trip to Atlanta (because yes, we had to drive back across Texas just a few days later). I wrote down the lyrics to this song at our next stop, when we traded seats. Hours and hours of straight lines and, if I’m lucky, stars. The buzz of the overhead lights at the empty gas station, and the moths trying to stay warm. There’s something about the hours between midnight and dawn, the small hours, that gets me pensive. Puts the pedal down and locks in and goes. I don’t know if you’ve ever driven east to west across Texas, but that is one really wide state of the union. I think we drove overnight so we could arrive on New Year’s Eve. My younger cousin was the first of our generation to get married, and we were going to celebrate her, and my grandfather’s birthday. I stopped in Arkansas on the way, left my car parked outside my sister’s double-wide trailer, got in her car and we drove together to Tucson, Arizona for a family reunion. I was going to enroll at Emory’s Candler School of Theology and work on a master’s degree. Just after Christmas in 1997, I loaded up all my worldly possessions into my 1989 Honda Civic (which got 40+ miles to the gallon even back then!) and drove south from Saint Paul toward Atlanta. ![]() ![]() ![]()

People love to watch transcendent talent, no matter what form it takes, so it's nice to see that hard work rewarded. There's a lot of merit to that philosophy, but there's also something kinda awesome about how Acai, armed with a forgotten game and a boatload of wicked custom tracks, has managed to carve out a real career. SOULLESS 4 SONG PROThat mindset is what transformed Ninja from a random Halo pro to a Fortnite god with Drake on speed dial. The conventional wisdom has always said that a streamer needs to jump in on a burgeoning Twitch scene early, right when it's getting traffic, to build an audience. He won't be running out of content any time soon. Here, for instance, is Acai conquering a chart tuned for Kanye's infamous "Poopity Scoop" moment (opens in new tab). He goes viral constantly-there's an endless share of flabbergasted tweets and Facebook videos highlighting his craziest clears-and those Clone Hero architects have proven to be capable shitposters. In 2015 he started streaming Guitar Hero on Twitch (opens in new tab), and has since accumulated a sizable 64,000 followers. "You just grab the tracks and put them in a folder." "It makes the process a million times easier," says Acai. ![]() Today, the vast majority of this community thrives on Clone Hero (opens in new tab), a fan-made, Unity-developed freeware module that's far friendlier to custom tracks than that hacked Guitar Hero 3 client. "People would roll their hands across a piano, and someone would make notes to that … It makes 'Through The Fire And The Flames' look like 'Barracuda.'" "The songs we would play would sound like an absolute mess," he laughs. That's not the fantasy Acai was after anymore. When you play vanilla Guitar Hero, the appeal is those few moments of self-delusion where you convince yourself that you truly are nailing the "Possum Kingdom" riff in a stadium in Rio De Janeiro. "That's how people got extremely good at the game."Īcai tells me that some of the tracks he found in this scene transcend the basic functions of musicality. "There were people making their own songs specifically to be the hardest, and fastest thing possible, to really push players to their limits," explains Acai. This was his personal Guitar Hero golden age sitting in his bedroom, downloading bootleg files, playing through them with Slash. Suddenly the ceiling of what was possible in this game got a lot higher. SOULLESS 4 SONG CRACKEDSo, around 2011, he turned to the underground, where he first met the mad scientists who were cooking up truly demonic note charts that were only playable on a cracked PC copy of Guitar Hero 3. Music games, as a mainstream concern, were no more, and a nation's worth of Rock Band drums and DJ Hero turntables were moved to basements, attics, and junkyards.Īcai, unlike most of us, never stopped loving Guitar Hero, and he was determined to find a way to keep playing, and keep challenging himself, any way he could. America fell out of love with Guitar Hero about as quickly as it was initially seduced, and Activision put the name out to pasture after the soft sales of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, and the entirely unnecessary triptych of band-specific spinoffs for Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Metallica (remember those?). Of course, we now know just how unsustainable those franchises ended up being. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, and it felt like the momentum was never going to give out. Everyone started hoarding plastic instruments, every game store started up local and regional tournaments, a 16-year old named Blake from North Carolina dropped out of school to play the game full-time. ![]() Music game mania hit its fever pitch in 2007, with the dual release of Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band. ![]() ![]() ![]() I guess that I have to change something with the layers to make the colors to take effect but I am not sure and if that's the case I don't know how and how I can assign the layers with elements in the. ![]() Weapon speed has a higher impact on damage in VC than it does in Native. Strength is better for combat overall but VC differs from Native in that agility builds can also be quite useful. Having a strong combat character is both useful in that you can heavily influence the outcome of a battle and generally makes the game more fun. Strength and agility are more of a toss up. You will need to have a big army in this game and that requires persuasion to build and leadership to maintain. You don't need an absurdly high charisma to be successful but having a reasonable amount will greatly improve your quality of life. The most important attribute in VC is charisma. As such I recommend using this guide to optimize your character. ![]() This means that your starting attributes matter much more than they do in Native while your starting skills won't make any difference past a certain level. If at any point you decide to use Google for any information about Easy68k, be prepared to get an answer from the Professor himself. Out of evident remorse for his creation, he gives computer science students advice on defeating Easy68k.įig 1: Kelly warns the foolish “v68k” not to give Easy68k access to the rest of his computer. During the mid-2000s, Professor Kelly appears to have been active on the Easy68k forums. After some patching up, Professor Kelly decided it was time to release Frankenstein emulator upon the world that had rejected him with a cry of “Hello, cruel world”. According to his website, he created the emulator by combining an editor one of his students had written for the Teesside assembler with source code for an incomplete 68k assembler and simulator. Part II: A Forensic Reconstruction of Easy68k’s Development At some point during the mid-80s, Easy68k was perpetrated by a mad computer scientist named Professor Charles Kelly, who was teaching at Monroe Community College. Furthermore, the Easy68k environment contains various bugs that will sabotage your code quietly and efficiently, like a thief in the night. Because assembly languages are so low-level, even the most basic of programming tasks-such as creating for loops, storing variables, displaying text, running if statements, performing arithmetic operations, and calling methods in 68k will usually require more code and always be less intuitive than in any other language. Can I make the same kinds of programs with Easy68k that I can with other languages/environments? Well… kind of. I’ve used Python/Java/C++/Ruby/etc., but I’m new to assembly languages. If Easy68k is just an emulator, can I write 68k programs in another environment? Yes, but according to Google, Easy68k is the #1 68k assembler and simulator, so you may as well just bite the bullet and take it like a man. Using Easy68k as an emulator, you can write and assemble instructions in the Motorola 68K language with all the dexterity of a drunken rhinoceros carrying an infant across a tightrope. A good assembly language is made up of discrete instructions which can be translated into hexadecimal or binary with a minimum of effort. Assembly Language? What’s that? An assembly language is a low-level programming language, meaning it has relatively direct correspondence to the kinds of basic instructions that make your computer work. For the time being, we will ignore the questionable usage of the words “allows” and “run”, and accept this as our working definition of the Easy68K environment. According to the Easy68k website, () “EASy68K is a 68000 Structured Assembly Language IDE” which “allows you to edit, assemble, and run 68000 programs”.
